ZERO WASTE PATTERN MAKING - Week 2

The first class back on Monday for week 2 was straight into it - I chose to learn how to use the AccuMark software and the large scale plotters to create a zero waste pattern block.

It it quite difficult to see the pencil marks in this image, but this pattern block is much like the small squares of paper that we were designing in the first week, in that each piece wraps around to the body, rather than cutting shapes out of the fabric and leaving waste behind.

The real test was, however, when I went back to try the whole process again with just my notes from class. After printing it out 3 times as it was incorrect I started to wonder whether this really was zero waste, until I finally had success and printed one out that was correct!

I will look at all the material and processes I have learnt over the weekend and cut out my final pattern pieces then - the last fab-lab process our group will learn will be digital embroidery so I hope I can incorporate this into my garment. The Make/Use website explains that you can use digital embroidery to put the garment pieces together so I may use this and the insertion stitch that I tested out in week 1.
